    • Although they married in Sturgeon Falls, Azarie and Annie met on Allumette Island, where they were neighbours many years earlier. He often recounted stories of "bouncing her on his knee" when he was a young lad (she would have been a baby at the time). They married after a whirlwind three-week romance in Sturgeon Falls where Annie was working. Most of the children were born in Chapleau and considered that their home through much of their youth. The older girls went to high school in North Bay and were anxious to leave Chapleau due to a lack of opportunities. The family moved to Fort William about 1930 and turned their sawmill operations over to a partner. They lost the mill shortly after in the Depression and remained in Thunder Bay area for the rest of their lives, as did many of their children and grandchildren. [7]
