    • In 1831 census Abraham and Marthe were living along the St-Antoine Concession Road. Abraham did not own the land, but was renting a small subsistence plot producing only corn and potatoes. He gave half his produce to the landowner and paid a small annual rent of 3 pounds & six shillings. He owned one cow, one horse and one pig. The prospect of free land along the Upper Ottawa River (the frontier at that time) attracted him and his sons. According to Fabien's marriage record, in 1848 they were living in Contrecoeur. They attended their daughter, Justine's, marriage in Varennes in 1849, so apparently moved very shortly after since they were on Allumette Island (Chapeau, QC) for their son, Georges, marriage in 1850. They probably travelled by barge up the St Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers, pretty well up to their destination. There were few traversable roads except for portages along the river. In 1861, Abraham and Marthe were living on property owned by son, Georges, at lot 35, range 4 on Allumette Island (actually Demers Centre). They occupied a 1½ storey log home built in 1859 and they owned 1 milch cow worth about $20. By 1871, Abraham is a tenant on 9 acres of property on Range 4, Lot 35 & across the road on Range 5, Lot 35 on Allumette Island. The main properties are owned by his sons, George and Fabien, respectively; in addition he had added one pig to his farm holdings. The farm produced wheat, peas, potatoes, hay, tobacco and firewood.

  • Notes 
    • Marthe's family was probably well known to the Allards because they had lived in the same area around St-Antoine in the Richelieu valley for some generations. The family name is recorded alternatively as Meunier and Lapierre, though by the mid 1800's, the Canadian government was restricting the use of 'dit' names and Marthe seemed to have chosen Lapierre as her surname; unlike some of her brothers and sisters who used Meunier.
