    Cause: Burn
    • «b»Death from Camphene Explosion«/b»
Mr. James M. Allard was dreadfully burned by camphene at No. 6 Albany St., on Thursday evening; and we are sorry to add, that the unfortunate sufferer has since deceased from his wounds.
The Courier gives the circumstances of this melancholy case as follows:- Mrs. Allard held a lighted oil lamp in one hand and the camphene lamp in the other, while Mr. Allard poured in the liquid. By some accident the fluid ignited, and the clothing of both was instantly in a blaze.
The boarders in the house and the neighbors rushed into the parlor and succeeded in divesting Mrs. Allard of her fiery habiliments, but not, however, until her body was badly burned. Mr. Allard ran into the street an entire blaze of fire, and implored a boy who was watering the street by means of a hand hose, to turn the stream upon his
burning body, which the lad did with promptness, and the fire was soon extinguished, but not until it had produced awful effects, which subsequently proved fatal. Mr. Allard was taken up senseless, conveyed into his house, when it was ascertained that
his head, face and body were shockingly burned. He lingered in terrible torment, until noon yesterday.when he died.
He was an upholsterer by trade, 38 years old, and leaves one or two children. Mrs. Allard, though badly hurned, is expected to recover.
Coroner Smith held an inquest on the body this forenoon, and the jury returned, "that he came to his death, on the 19th of July, 1850, at 2 o'clock P.M., in consequence of injuries received about 1-4 to 8 o'clock the evening previous, by his setting on fire a
quantity of Marsh's Patent Oil, contained in a jug, which exploded, setting his clothes on fire -- he being at the time in a state of insanity." [Journal of Saturday].
